Old Lahaina Prison

Old Lahaina Prison

In the 19th century, Lahaina grew to be a bustling center for the whaling industry resulting in a town filled with boisterous sailors. In 1851, it was decided by missionaries and town officials that something needed to be done to control sailors who were a bit too rowdy. Construction began on the new Hale Pa'ahao (stuck in irons house) and was completed in 1853.

The jail was mainly used to detain sailors who had been over-served and would wait for a day or so for their captain to come claim them and pay the bail. In 1967 the jail was restored to be a museum and botanical garden open to the public to learn more about the history of Lahaina!
