Hana
About Hana
Along Maui's rugged eastern coastline is the peaceful town of Hana, considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers. The legendary road to Hana is only 52 miles from Kahului; however, the drive can take anywhere from two to four hours to complete since it's full of narrow one-lane bridges, hairpin turns, and incredible island views. Visitors are encouraged to experience the road to Hana through a permitted tour led by professional guides for a more enjoyable experience and guides who provide valuable insights about the surrounding area and its cultural history. Many say that Hana is all about the drive to get there, from the many waterfalls and pools to the colorful fruit stands and locally made banana bread providing ample stops along the way. If you are stopping by Wai'anapanapa State Park, Maui's black sand beach, please note that advanced reservations are required to enter the park (reservations can be made here: https://www.gowaianapanapa.com/. Hana town itself is rooted in Hawaiian tradition, where many Kanaka (native Hawaiians) live and work (the name "Hana" itself means "Work"). Feel free to swim at Hana Beach Park, stop for a snack at the Hasegawa General Store, or drive a short 10 miles south, where you'll find the Pipiwai Trail, where you can hike to the 400 ft Waimoku Falls. Please note that the Seven Sacred Pools are closed and considered unsafe.
